A fluffy Maloghurst themed list - pls inspire me!

Recommended Posts

Hi guys,

I've been toying with this idea about building a Maloghurst themed force. The fluff around Maloghurst is wicked awesome. A bitter, fiendishly clever and sneaky fella with a real gift for politics (almost reminds me of Roger Stone) but not physically broken. In other words; A bitter old man. Whats not to like???

So I wanna build a force, still undecided if it should be a ZM or a regular force. I like his buffs as a commander. I like that Reavers (to me) looks like they are mediocre but very cool models - atleast they are not useless. The fact that he makes both Reaves and Veterans troops is awesome.

So here is what I am thinking. Maloghurst would only ever go into combat if it was REALLY important. So naturally he would be bringing specialists and veterans of the inner circle. Now what else would he be bringing? I wanna keep a fluffy feel to the list. I dont mind bringing shit units, nor do I have a problem with bis units. As long as it contributes to a fluffy list. I havnt even made up my mind about what RoW should be used.

Please feel free to share your thoughts and inspire me!

This is how far (and it is not a long way) I have gotten so far with the list.

HQ

-Maloghurst The Twisted - 140 pts

--3 chosen: 3 power weapons - 105 pts

Troops

-15 Reavers; 14 chainaxes, 3 meltaguns, Jump packs, Sergent with Artificers armour, powerfist and meltabombs - 424 pts

-15 Reavers; 14 chainaxes, 3 meltaguns, Jump packs, Sergent with Artificers armour, powerfist and meltabombs - 424 pts

-10 Veterans; Vexilla, 2 x Missile launcher, Marksmen, Sergent with Artificers armour and powerfist - 245 pts

--Anvillus drop pod - 115 pts

-10 Veterans; Vexilla, 2 x Missile launcher, Marksmen, Sergent with Artificers armour and powerfist - 245 pts

--Anvillus drop pod - 115 pts

Fast attack

-Anvillus drop pod - 115 pts

this brings me to a grand total of 1.928 pts.

Im not sure what to bring next. Perhaps a couple of reconnaissance marines, and something for surgical strike, but what!?

With your Reavers you've fallen into the trap I see a lot of people do and that's tooling them up to do 2 different jobs.

Either make them Assault and give them power weapons or reduce them to 10 in a Rhino and give them Combi Meltas or Combi Plasma.

I would suggest if you're taking Marksmen give your Vets Heavy Bolters the more shots will be better as these will be your primary people taking down Mech and Custodes

Maloghurst stops you from Sweeping Advance so I wouldn't put him with the Command Squad maybe some Justaerin since they can't sweep as well? You do have an issue with transporting them though. I love the Caestus but a Kharybdis and Spartan does just as well.

I get your points Pastel, thanks.

Justaerins could be an escort. However the command squad is only there for the fluffyness. Maloghurst with his chosen = <3

Now what else would you fit into the list if you had to make a fluffy Maloghurst themed list?

I think you have the right troops there but I would look at adding Apothecaries to your Reaver Squads and make each squad number 16.

A Chaplain in one would be good as Maloghurst did whip up people into a kinda religious frenzy with the Warrior Lodges.

Your army needs some long range fire power/Anti Tank and I would add in anything you feel like Laser Destroyer Vindicators, Grav Rapiers or Javelins are all good options

Why try to cover all bases, if the goal is to develop a themed specialist army?

If he plays against armies that are specifically infantry based then its spot on but if it's a theme and it will be against random opponents or even themed Armour Breakthrough lists it will struggle there is no denying that.

I ran Maloghurst a few times and always found that I needed Anti Tank like every army does. Machine Killer Vets could work just as well.

The purpose of the list is themed and fluffy insertion force. Its not meant to be a competitive tournament list.

That said, it doesnt hurt if the list can deal with some armour. I dont feel that rapiers or vindicators fit in well with the concept as they are more "real battle" rather than a surgical strike team. The Javelin could be an option or perhaps one or two of the sicaran variants.

Perhaps some dreadnoughts as they fit in well with the veteran theme? and the dreadnoughts are awesome looking!

Can a reaver squad exceed 15? thought 15 was the max.

Is Orbital Assault a SoH fluffy list?

Sorry what I meant was s that if you add an Apothecary the squad number goes to 16 which is really fluffy

Take Javelins in pairs or 3s I've always found they work best like that. I prefer the Cyclone with Multi Melta but each to their own.

Might as well have all the Reaver Squads as Troops so they score with Maloghurst but I think 3 units is a bit much I would rather take another unit of Vets in a Dreadclaw with Machine Killer and Combi Meltas so you have two units of Vets dropping turn 1

In that case, run with the fluff and enjoy the freedom of non-competitive wargaming, the Heresy is a more beautiful experience once you decide  to leave your ego at the door.

Excellent! Now what is the fluff for the SoH legion? What would Maloghurst run with?

Yes, Orbital Assault is fluffy for the SoH and is excellent for recreating their Speartip tactics.

As for units that Mal would run with - if you read the BL books he rarely sees combat due to the injuries he received in 'Horus Rises' and as Horus' equerry is more responsible for logistics and management.

However, we sign up to this game for the fun and rolling dice so...

In his role as Horus' right hand, Mal would have access to the best equipment and units. He is also credited with creating the Luperci (sadly however there are no rules for these yet). I would see Mal utilising Reavers, Veterans and Justearin as troops to represent the core elite units of the XVIth. He would be able to requisition any vehicles or other troops as needed due to his control over logistics. What this means is conceivable you could have any units you want however, for what you describe above, perhaps focus on the elite side of the units?

Thank you, this kind of input is very helpfull!

About choosing Maloghurst as the chief, yes I am aware that he wasnt much on the field after he got injured. Thats why I want this to be themed as a specialised insertion force - only meant to be used when it is absolutely vital (fluffness). I dont really care about how well it would do in a tournament, but the intention is to make this themed, så Malog would need a couple of buddies to protect him while he is directing the battle elsewhere. Eventually I think it would end up as a display project rather than a gaming project :-)

So I think I will build the force around the orbital assault RoW, The dreadnoughts needs to have a bit more mixed weapons so its not just spams (and will look better with variation).

Penddraig is a beautiful man!!!

Not in looks of course, but definitely when it comes to his Heresy knowledge.

Tends to be specialist on the bits I like or play. I know next to nothing about Salamanders, Raven Guard or Alphas for example.

Not a problem. I've got my OA SoH thread around if you want a look at bits.

Is it the 131 (link in your signature) you are refering to? Ive already had a look :-) I dont suppose you have a link to the army with pictures?

I was considering building Malog using the officer from the SoH command squad, but replacing his chest with the chest from the latest white dwarf. Might look really weird....undecided....

There is a great conversion using the Nerik Dreygur, I'm not sure who did it but it's pretty easy to find.

Having used Maloghurst quite a bit I was just offering my experiences it was no way meant to "optimal" or "competitive" I just find Reavers need an Apothecary and by adding it you Squad size would equal 16 which I always like as Maloghurst is obsessed with the Legion number.

An orbital assault list would fit perfectly but so would anything else really I would focus on Infantry more than Tanks but as said previously Maloghurst would have access to everything the only thing I don't see him taking in abundance is Jetbikes or Outriders

The link in my signature takes you to the Aus30k site where I just put up some background (reminds me I need to go back and update it as lots more has been added).

As Pastel has mentioned, there are a few conversions of Mal hanging around - look at Google Images. I don't tend to use named characters for personal reasons but there are some nice versions. Of course, you can guarantee as soon as you make one, FW will release their own version.

@Pastel: I know :-)   and your input is also being used! Ive stopped making swiss army knife Raevers :-)

I was thinking Malog could ride in a drop pod, then use that fly around a bit. Straight in from orbit, and back out when needed :-)  Kinda cool.

Oh, didnt realise you played on the legion number with the squad size. Brilliant point.

@Pen; Thanks for the link :-)
