Hi all,

I'm finalizing my SW list but when thinking which dreadnought I wanted to have inside my Mastodon, I realised that was the Cortus with dual Chainfists.

Just as a quick comparison vs the Dreadnought acknowledged as best in CC:

Striking before

A: 5

To hit: 2.5

Not saved: 1.25

AP 13: Pen

Destroyed: 41.7%

Striking together

A: 6

To hit: 3

Not saved: 1.5

AP 13: Pen

Destroyed: 50%

Due to it's special rules, a Cortus can have 6 Attacks on the charge (mine will always get the charge since he's inside a Mastodon), or 5 Attacks on the charge striking BEFORE the Leviathan.

So the math says that there's a 50% chance of destroying the Leviathan if you risk your Cortus and strike at the same time or a 41.7% chance of destroying it if you safely strike before.

If you do the best of both worlds and select an extra Attack on turn one and strike at +1 I in turn 2 of the duel, you pretty much have the clear upper hand in the duel (75% of chances of destroying it if you survive turn 1).

Not bad considering the cortus with 2x chainfists is less than half the price of the Leviathan huh?

Striking before

A: 5

To hit: 2.5

Not saved: 1.25

AP 13: Pen

Destroyed: 41.7%

Cortus is good, but I wouldn't be surprised if results were a bit less rosy on average.

If I would would face your Cortus/Mastodon combo I would stand in terrain to make you I1 on charge. But still, not bad with half the price. I still like my Leviathan.

Still that's a really expensive way to deliver a Cortus to a Leviathan....Just take a whole Talon of Cortus, pocket the points.

Cortus has move through cover so can charge through terrain, right? Also, it's not about finding an ideal combo, I just happen to have a Mastodon and I'm gonna use it yes or yes since It's gonna take more than a year to paint a playable list.

Move through cover helps with distance not initiative. Unless there is new FAQ somewhere.

Well, then i go for the extra A in turn 1 and have a proper 50% chance of destroying it :) Or run a Talon of 2 for the same price and pretty much guarantee the kill :P

P.S.: I will not run a talon of 2, I hate duplicating units until I have one of each painted :P

Oh I commented on this on B&C. And yeah new Dread Chain fist rules are not specialist weapons. So yeah only need 1 on each for that great armorbane. So with the points you saved you could put a Gravgun on him and throw a Haywire shot at the Leviathan also before you get into combat.

Cortus is looking better and better. Perfect Anti Armor system to support my list for measly 150 points. Plus legion specific so it's a must have :)

Just opened 2 FW chainfists for my BaC Contemptors! (they make great Contemptor-Cortus Dreadnoughts). Great loadout - it's a cheap unit that can really hurt your opponent.

2 things:

1) the cortus can only overcharge itself on its owner's turn.  So you won't be giving it +2A on the charge then +1I the next turn.

2) the fact that it doesn't have an invulnerable save in melee is important when it fights against other dreads, especially leviathans.  If it doesn't kill it's target on the charge a lot of times it dies fairly quickly, many times without fully destroying the dreadnought in my experience.  I usually go with the +1I on the charge against other dreads for this reason and the graviton shots from the hands help remove a few vital HPs before you get there.

Also, how on earth are you getting 47% and 50% destroyed rates?  if you penetrate 1.25 or 1.5 times, you have to roll a 6 on those rolls to actually destroy the leviathan, otherwise you do 1.25-1.5 hull points with some extra effect, but the leviathan is still going to hit you back.  The destroy rates are actually 20.8% and 25%.

Meanwhile, assuming the Leviathan has a gun arm and a siege drill it's getting 3 attacks, hitting and penetrating you 2 times doing 2 hull points and having a 33% chance of destroying you outright.  And that's assuming none of his snapshots do any damage for that critical 3rd hull point.  Plus then your Mastadon is in trouble...   :P

Thought you'd destroy it on a 5 or a 6, difference is wrecked or explodes?

Leviathan with siege drill and claw, running out of a masterdon is so much cooler than a poxy cortus.

5 is just immobilized, 6 is explodes.  Wrecked only happens when the vehicle runs out of hps and doesn't explode.

Only issue there is a mastodon can't carry a leviathan. 😢
