So I thought I'd split this off to it's own thread from my existing Mechanicum force. It started off as just being part of my usual force with one Knight, but as it's growing I wanted to be able to field a full Knight list.

The rough background idea I had was a small force who left Baroda as soon as the new Knight chassis arrived, on the first passing expedition fleet (my Mechanicum force).

It started with the Cerastus Knight-Castigator, I think it was just as the scheme for Makabius was shown, but not linked to a house at that point but I liked the look. So it's a slightly different scheme to the Knights that followed it. I did add a few Makabius transfers to the shoulders when they were released, but otherwise left it as was.

20160703_150318.jpg

In most games (when I play as allies to Mechanicum) he is a standard Scion Martial. He's been a solid performer, the sweep attack + deflagerate can remove entire squads in one go and so is difficult to tarpit.

Next came the Cerastus Knight-Lancer, this time I had Book 4 with the details of the House and it's pattern closer meets the official one. Including the excellent transfers.

20160703_150237.jpg

Up until now, he is nearly always used alongside the Castigator as an ally force with my Mechanicum. I take him as the Seneschal as the +1 Inv save is very good, especially as it can be used in CC. He is a bit more hit and miss. Is often the first target my opponent will try to bring down. Though it's rare there is a target of value high enough to earn his points back before he dies. Last game he stomped a 10 man Garvewarden Squad and their Praetor into the ground just as their massed chainfists brought him down.

Next came the Cerastus Knight-Atropos. Had a lot of issues with the first miniature due to persistent release agent, but eventually the great customer service at FW worked things out and I finally got him assembled and finished. Not sure if it's just the practice of being my third knight, or the hassle I went through to get him finished, but he's my favourite of the three so far. He has a couple of lightning bolts on the chest plate, as well as a campaign mark on the carapace to mark him having fought alongside the VIII Legion as part of the 17th Expedition fleet before he met up with other members of his own house.

20160703_150211.jpg

Only used in one game (back before the previous version was returned to FW) so don't have much experience but cannot wait to get him into battle now. Not sure how i'd use him, but I think just as a Scion Martial until I can find a role for him.

After enjoying painting the Atrapos and preferring the rounded carapace, I decided to go for the Questoris Knight-Magaera. I've never been a fan of the plastic knight, thinking it looks too stumpy. But the FW parts I think make enough of a difference. The aim was to try magnetizing so I can use him with Crusader rules mostly, with the lightning gun counting as the rapid fire battle cannon or thermal cannon when in Crusader mode. Here he is as WIP, in both modes.

20160702_223229.jpg20160702_223244.jpg

A couple of small changes, such as replacing the tips of the melta-gun and heavy flamer to more heresy looking versions. I also magnetized the Lightning gun arm, so in future I could get the parts to make the other options.

20160628_233328.jpg

I'm planning to have the stumpy done before the FW Open day in the hope that the Porphyrion is available to buy. So that's it for the Knights so far.

The army also includes a small (but possibly growing) Solar Auxilia force as allies. These are made from the GW Skitarii kit, with the idea being that they are one of the small retainer forces mentioned as some of the Makabius knights have accompanying them as they head off to find glory.

First up was a 20 man lasrifle section, painted to match the house colours.

20160703_145457.jpg

I then used some of the spare parts (and did quite a lot of bit hunting on ebay, etc) to complete a storm section armed with volkites (a slightly different pattern, that was phased out...)

20160703_145641.jpg

These will be getting a Dracosan at some point for their transport.

Finally a shot of the Retinue so far, including a WIP mortar. Using the standard SA kit, with the Skitarii gunner added.

20160703_145850.jpg

Also has the Knight Scion model and a kitbashed HQ based on the Genestealer Primus. Not fully sure on the HQ side of the force yet, I may end up going for a tank commander in the future.

That's it for now. Finishing the Mageara and Medusa next, while waiting and drooling over the Porphyion...

Looks like Stirland mud followed by a terminatus stone drybrush, with mordheim turf and fake barbed wire to suit :)

Thanks. Yeah it's Stirland mud spread on quite thickly, left to dry overnight. I then do a heavy drybrush of a mixture of snakebite leather (not sure the modern equivalent) and a bit of Wild Rider Red. I them do a dry brush of Lugganath Orange. The grass is Army Painter: Battlefields XP: Highland Tuft. I've not used any barbed wire, but that's not a bad suggestion actually!

Whoops, my mind added barbed wire in :P Loving the scheme by the way, very industrialised :) The volkite stands out perfectly against the otherwise almost-monotone background

Had my first game with this force and the list I used is as follows (2250pts):

20160707_185928.jpg

*HQ*

Knight-Lancer Seneschal (Warlord)

[Allies]Lord Marshall (pilot on foot)

*Elites*

Knight-Crusader Preceptor - Melta Gun, Rapid Fire battle cannon (questoris)

*Troops*

Knight-Castigator Scion Martial

[Allies] Lasrifle section - Blast Chargers

[Allies] Storm Section - Volkites, Nuncio Vox

*Heavy Support*

Knight-Atrapos Arbalaster - Occular Augments

[Allies] Medusa - Pintle multi laser

Note I didn't have the points for the rocket pod on the Crusader in the picture, in future games I'd take a carapace weapon over the Preceptor upgrade (though the wording has changed in the new Red Book, so knights within 6" of the preceptor AND the preceptor itself gets to overwatch\intercept)

The medusa took the brunt of the early fire being wrecked early on, allowing the Cerastus knights to move forward. The Lancer ended up against 10 Gravewardens, dying to their chainfists, but taking them with him with between his attacks and a roll of 6 on the stomp table. That's the second game where that same turn of events has happened!

The infantry just hung back on objectives while all focus was on the Knights. For future I've ordered a Dracosian (to collect at the open day) to carry the storm section.

I've also been making some progress on painting the Crusader. While it will mostly be used as a crusader, I assembled the power fist as well, so there are a number of ways he can be used/equipped.

20160713_103250.jpg

I'll be looking forward to see any info on the Secutarii at the open day and how I could work them into my list or create a list using their new rules. Oh and the Porphyrion.

Update since the open day. Purchases for this list were a Dracosan (to transport the Storm Section) and some of the new skitarii upgrades.

Dracosan is still having a wash, but I got the first ten Secutarii assembled:

20160717_212616.jpg

Here is a shot of the bits you actually get:

20160717_155957.jpg

Mildly interesting point is the parts for the sergeant (crested helm, point arm and 1 handed gun arm) are in addition to the ones you need to make 10 standard Peltasts. This would mean that either the squad sergeant is optional in terms of the unit entry these will get or, the unit can be over 10 men.

The GW store at Warhammer World only had 1 box of the plastic Skitarii left so ten is all I can do, until I can get to the local store and grab another 10.

No idea on the rules yet, but I'll be painting them to match the existing Skitarii i'm counting as SA. I'm just hoping there is a way of fitting them in.

Do you get the rules for knights in the same red book as the SA, or the Mechanicum one?

It's the CRUSADE IMPERIALIS: ARMY LISTS red book. The Mechanicum red book does contain some of the rules for single Knights, but to use them as their own army, you need either Book 4, or the new red book.

Amazing. Inspirational. Exactly what I want to do/am going to do.

Any other plans for using the existing Skitarii or SA models to add to the force?

Thanks guys, they are really nice. The arms are all lettered, so it makes lining them up so much easier and quick to assemble. From the initial look, I prefered the Hoplites, which I assume most people did as they'd sold out by the time I got to the sales area. On the plus side these are still nice and I'm guessing when the rules come out, these will be more useful in terms of gaming with them.

For Servoarm, here's a closer shot of the HQs:

20160719_212145.jpg

They need the bases finishing off with some grass and black on the edge. The Knight Scion is used just as a vanila HQ. I think in the long term a Tank Commander will be my choice, possibly in a Malc Infernus, because who doesn't want a 18" Torrent Hellstorm.

Had 2 quick games last night, both were easy wins against 2500pts of Deathguard. A "normal" Legion list just doesn't have enough to cope with 4 Knights on the board, so it will be the last game I play with all of them for some time.

List I used was from the Knight Questoris List:

20160825_180420.jpg

HQ

Knight-Lancer Seneschal *Warlord*

Elites

Knight-Crusader Preceptor - Stormspear Rocket pod, gatling cannon and melta cannon

Troops

Knight-Atrapos Scion Martial - Occular Augments

Knight-Castigator Scion Martial

With Solar Auxilia allies:

HQ

Lord Marshall

Troops

Lasrifle Section - Blast Chargers

Storm Section - Nuncio Vox

Dedicated Transport Dracosan - Demolisher cannon, flare shield, armoured ceramite

Heavy Support

Medusa Battery (1 Medusa) - Pintle mounted multi laser

All the knights are done now apart from the alternative weapons for the Crusader\Magaera. The SA force just need the tanks doing. I then have made a start on painting the 20 Secuturii Peltasts I got at the open day. Just waiting on the rules for them and the Hoplite upgrades to be released.

Slowly making some progress on the Secutarii:

20 peltasts are pretty much finished:

20160926_201353.jpg

Been batch painting to try and get them finished. But l'll go back over them to do some more detailing as I get time.

Also made a start on assembling the hoplites:

20160926_201419.jpg

I cocked up one of the plastic bodies, so waiting on a replacement from a bitz site but hopefully can get the rest assembled tonight.

I've seen the 40k rules FW released, but I've not had an answer back from FW about using the same rules in 30k games. So for now, these aren't being used in games (except proxying as my volkite storm section).

Will be keeping my fingers crossed for the new Knight stuff (Porphyrion, Questoris variant heads, Cerastus Mechanicum variant kits) to be released over the next few weeks or months. Would be interested to see if FW release any more units for the Secutarii as they really transform the look compared to the plastic vanguard/rangers.

So the end of last year was fairly quiet for me hobbywise, but I'm starting 2017 with a big project.

That moment when you realise just how big he's going to be, certainly the biggest and most complex kit i've done yet.

20170108_192943.jpg

I made the round trip to Warhammer World on Saturday just to pick him up, I got half the kit washed Saturday (my usual washing bowl was too small!), the rest Sunday morning and then after checking the kit over and making sure everything was there, I started on the legs.

20170108_204418.jpg

Actually found the legs to go together pretty well, roughly the same layout as the Cerastus. The only issue was I didn't initially spot the different lower pistons had to match each armour plate, but luckily I only had two in the wrong place and they both popped out without breaking. The front piston has a single line that matches a single groove on the back of the front plate, the outside piston has two lines and the two smaller plates have 3 so it has to be done so they match up. Just a few cables and pistons to do, then onto the torso tonight!
