With the end in sight of my Sons of Horus infantry, I`ve decided to start the next project.  This is a small stop-gap project while I wait to get my Solar Auxilia in the autumn.  Since Book 5 was first discussed at the Heresy Weekender last year, I`ve been interested in an Imperial Militia / Warp Cult force.  The release of Book 5 really firmed this idea up so I started to pick up kits last October. Naturally, this has got out of hand so that I`ve decided to put together two allied forces of about 600 points each.

I`ve given myself a few personal rules in collecting these allied forces:

  1. These are not competitive forces.  I`m putting these together as a modelling project of units that interest me and will follow a narrative for each force.
  2. The Beastmen are actually bought as a 6th Edition WFB army and so are staying on square bases and won`t be heavily converted for Age of Darkness games.  All the models are going to be used in a 40k Renegades and Heretics force as most can easily be re-purposed, but once again as an allies force with plenty of options.
  3. Each of the allied forces are designed to be used with either my Sons of Horus or future Solar Auxilia.

The Vendel Rangers

These are the first militia allied force that I`m putting together.  The brief background for these is that they are an Old Hundred light infantry regiment with the Gene-Enhanced and Survivors of the Dark Age provenances.  Thinking behind this is a lot of the Old Hundred regiments appear to be Gene-enhanced and there are a lot of hints that Unification War technology is more advanced than Great Crusade-era technology.

Base units

Basic force for the Imperial Militia

These are the base units that I have picked up.  The Leman Russ is going to be requisitioned into my future Solar Auxilia - too good for the Imperial Militia.  The envelope contains some conversions bits that will be added to the base Cadian models that will form the standard militia squad.   The white boxes on the left contain Empire Hellblaster Volley Guns that I am going to use as Thudd Guns as I like the archaic look compared to the more "modern" Rapier Thudd Guns in the SA.  The heavy weapons teams (on the right) will be left out at the moment but if I pick up two more then I can added those to the force.

This is my WiP kit-based Force Commander.  The carapace armour is now finished and I`ll be working on the rest over the next few weeks.  This also gives a few hints of what the main infantry squad will be like.  Really happy with how he looks and how the painting is going at the moment.

I painted these up last year.  I need to add more to this unit as I haven`t got enough basic troops before adding the special weapons.  I also want to replace the plasma-gun with a grenade launcher.

Lenaí an Athraithe

This will be the second of the two militia forces.  Brief background for these is that they were an Abhuman Assault Regiment but have fallen to Chaos since the Heresy begain.  I will be using the Abhuman and Tainted Flesh provenances for this force and will focus on just swamping the enemy in numbers.  This force is mostly going to be built for a 6th edition WFB force so will not be heavily converted for 30k game and are staying on square bases.

The basic force

Basic units for the Warp Cult

The two main boxes gives me 80 beastmen models and the plastic box at the front gives me another 20.  All the beastmen are going to be used as levies with close combat weapons.  The two boxes of minotaurs are going to be used as ogryns with close combat weapons.  The envelope at the front has some extra bits to make my Force Commander and the levy vexila.  At some point I will be adding some spawn into this force as well just so it stands out as suitable Chaos and twisted.

Looks like a fun plan, but I don't envy you painting 80 beastmen....

Pleased how this is going at the moment and it`s really nice to be painting something that isn`t sea-green.

Some more shots of my Force Commander.  Now with the under-armour colours base-painted and the first stage of the highlights added.  Plenty more to go but I`m pleased how he is coming along.

The start of the infantry.

Start of the first half of the infantry squad. All hooded heads and cloaks are just blu-tacked on at the moment.  Some of the models are extras for use as a Renegade and Heretic force in 40k.

Really enjoying doing these as a complete change to the SoH.  So many left to go but hopefully should look better once some paint starts getting on them.

Wood Elf Glade Guard.

Now that I've finished my Seraphon army for AoS and my dissertation is just in the formatting stage I can really devote some time to this project. Hopefully will add some updates later this week.

Updates!

Now that the Seraphon are out of the way, the next big project is the Imperial Militia.  While I`ve been waiting for a break in the weather to spray some basecoats these have been sitting around.  Luckily one clear day over the holiday meant that I could spray the base colours on the first squad of infantry and the Sentinels.  I haven`t done any more work on the infantry (yet) as I go carried away with the Sentinels.

The pictures show the completed camo. pattern which is (loosely) based on late war Wehrmacht armour patterns.  Still need to block in the other base colours, pin wash, and all the other bits but I`m happy with the progress so far.
