Alright! I'm officially starting this thread to keep me moving on my Salamanders. I still have plenty to do on my Alpha Legion, but I have been braining and building Salamanders for a little while now. I've got a decent pile of them in various states of assembled-ness, and some more in the mail. It took me a while to figure out a color scheme to shoot for, but then I saw this:

post-26807-0-23078900-1422399342.jpg

That's an Anaconda from the game Infinity. I hit the guy up on the forum I saw it on and he gave me all the colors he used, so I'm planning on pretty much replicating it.

I want Salamanders for Zone Mortalis/ Tactical Strike, as well as regular games, so I've got kind of two separate piles of models going. For zone mortalis, we have been playing 500 point lists, and this is what I've got (mostly) built for that.

Centurion: Power weapon, artificer armor

10 Breachers: 2 Flamers, power fist

5 Pyroclasts: Sgt has a Master Crafted weapon

For my 1850 list, I'm going with:

Delegatus: Salamander's Rite, Artificer, MC Power weapon, Refractor

3 Apothecaries with Augury Scanners

Mortis Contemptor with Multi Meltas

Contemptor with Plasma Canon

Fire Drakes with a smattering of hammers, shields, axes, and a heavy flamer

A dedicated Land Raider

14 Tacticals with a sgt sporting artificer armor, power weapon, and melta bombs

14 Tacticals with a sgt sporting artificer armor, power weapon, and melta bombs

10 Heavy Flamers with a sgt in artificer armor

I'm looking forward to giving these lists a shot! I plan on adding things to this army that I didn't really see fit for my Alphas. Things like rapiers, a spartan, a big nasty melta gun squad, etc.

Anyway, I'll post stuff as I go!

Cool!

I`m looking forward to seeing your results :D

"We have all burned. Down in the fire pits, or from the brander's
iron in the solitorium, we have all touched the fire. It leaves scars,
even for us. We carry them proudly, with honour. But the scars
we took that day on that battlefield, we bear only with shame
and regret. They are a memorial in flesh, a physical reminder of
everything we have lost, a burn even we fire-born cannot endure
without pain."

So, first game with the little green men! I learned that...

A: Salamander breachers reeeeaaallly are not running anywhere. -2 to their run moves puts the kibosh on that.

B: Salamanders in cold void are nasty as hell. Flamers in ZM are already extra mean, they are even worse in cold void, and then you add on the salamanders bonus. You end up with regular flamers being Str5 rending, shredding murderspewers.

C: There may be no real point to having any characters in power armor. The main disadvantage to cataphractii is the lack of running and sweeping advances, which salamanders suck at anyway. Also, a centurion in cataphractii with a shield is cheaper than one in artificer armor, a power weapon, a refactor field, and the shield. The armor will have an invunlerable save that is higher, as well.

D: Pyroclasts are super rad at this points level, but also have no ass in their pants when it comes to close combat.

The game was really fun and close. We played 500 pts, I played a breacher squad with two flamers and a fist, 5 pyroclasts, and a centurion with artificer and power sword. My opponent took a preator with pride of the legion, some grave guard, and a regular squad of terminators. Consequently, we were both able to avoid a lot of the cold void disadvantages as all of our models were either 2+ armor, or void hardened. In the end, I lost by one VP. It was really hard for me to deal with the terminators in CC, so I may go with a centurion with power axe instead of a sword next time.

So, I haven't touched this thread in a loooong time, but I haven't been idle. I have built close to 4000 pts of Salamanders!

But what I'm more excited about is that I finally got a test model painted. This is done slightly differently than I am planning, as I'll be airbrushing them, but I am excited about the scheme.

IMG_0945.JPG

IMG_0944.JPG

Here's a quick shot I took of my fire drakes, showing off their fancy chain fists:

IMG_0812.JPG

I smashed 5 drakes and 5 regular cataphractii together, combined with some tartaros shields, to make my drakes. The models are just too busy for my tastes, so thinning out the salamandery bits with some regular cataphractii was the way to go. I also hate the fire drake heads, so I jammed the MKIII salamander heads into the FD torsos where I needed to.

Here's what I have built so far:

10 Breachers

30 Tacticals

10 Heavy flamers

10 fire drakes

5 Pyroclasts (5 more to go)

Vulkan

3 Land Raiders (half built so far)

Contemptor (one more in a baggie, but I don't know how much use he's gonna get, so he hasn't made it onto the assembly line)

More news as it develops!

Looks real nice and dirty, in which I will always approve!

So, I went back to the Alphas for a good long while there, but I'm finally getting back around to the Salamanders. I'm attempting to get a little pile done for one of the events at Adepticon this year: The Calth Bash. It's a funsies event where everyone brings really basic units. I'm bringing a terminator HQ, a firedrake squad (which will be regular terminators), a vet squad, a tac squad, and a contemptor. It's all built and the priming has commenced. Here's a photo of all my left shoulder pads. I don't love the Salamander icon, so I'm using these pads from Spellcrow, instead.

Also, I have a vexillary I converted for the vet squad:

Since that photo, I added a tiny shield underneath the hanging scales, just to fill up that space a little. (Thanks Finn!)

Hopefully, this week I can get everything primed, as I'm going away for a week. I'd love to be able to come back to a project ready to hit the painting table.

Got some priming done! These are most of my Calth Bash models. I have the 20 man tac squad to finish up (backpacks, shoulder pads, pouches), and they will hopefully get primed tomorrow. This is rust-o-leum dark brown primer with a light dusting of Army Painter leather brown over top of that.

Also not pictured: My centurian that absolutely detonated after being introduced simultaneously to the concepts of A: Gravity and B: My driveway.

Hooray for the (soon) color green!

They can fight your Alpha mans at night.

Those shoulder pads are looking awesome.  I love the subtle varieties  :)

After my girlfriend discovered how expensive this hobby was and how much time I dedicated to it, she said: "It's either me, or 30k, one of us has to leave."
It was a pretty easy decision.
I still miss her a little bit.

Thanks guys! I am pretty excited about this army, and am very happy with the way they are shaping up.
I'm away on vacation right now, but before I left, I managed to start my vets. This is more or less how they are going to look, though they are both unfinished still. I will probably not go very far past this until our decals get released, as I want to weather those at the same time, so everything looks right.
