Hey Everyone

After collecting Sons of Horus for what seems forever I fancy a bit of a change from Power Armour and recently I have been contemplating SA. It pretty much started because I fell in love with the Macharius Vanquisher and after I saw I could potentially take 2 I think I was sold.

However I literally no nothing about them and before I buy the book and toys I was wondering if I could get some feedback on how you've found the army?

Literally tell me anything!

Cheers

Background for them is cool. They are the best of the Imperial Army and can lead Expeditionary Fleets by themselves without Astartes support. They are trained for void and dangerous environment warfare and for fighting when out-numbered. Effectively, they are 19th-century Colonial troops with high-tech equipment and weapons.

In game terms they have lots of ways to play. You could go for an infantry-heavy army behind Aegis defence lines with multiple units per troop slot - you can actually field more troops (and better quality) than Militia. Alternatively, you could go for a mechanised infantry army loaded in Draconsan transports. As well as these, you could have multiple tanks ranging from Leman Russ and Medusa through to Malcador and all the Baneblade variants. Alongside all of these options are aerial units with lightnings and Arvus Lighters to transport infantry as well as artillery: Medusa, Basilisk, thud guns. Final point is Volkite. Lots of Volkite. Some of your basic infantry carry Chargers and even some of you Leman Russ carry Demi-Culverins. Finally (in case you need more); specialist infantry like Ogryns can traumatise standard power armour Astartes in assault and Servitord can carry Haywire grenades to terrify any vehicles. All of you infantry gain bonuses in Overwatch and assaul meaning although their humans, even Astartes need to treat them with respect. Long range basic weapons can give an extra turns shooting against most basic weapons and they even have a higher strength weapon combined that can give Mechanicum Battle-Automata a shock.

I like them a lot. The only problem I have is the range is all resin and I haven't got the heart or the willingness or spend funds on another massive resin army after my SoH. That's another disadvantage is the cost. Whether you go for infantry or vehicles, they won't be cheap monetarily.

Have a look at them. See what you think.

I am a big fan of the models and the fluff, agree with all the points above - can be played in lots of interesting ways

The other (potentially) good thing is that I think they are sworn brothers with sons of horus, so if you did want to do more traitors, you could start off with an allied detachment and go from there (there is good fluff on traitor SA in book 4 I think?)

That's how I started mine - just got 2x20 and the command squad as a cool allied detachment for open play or ZM - I then slowly expanded from there

With the Ogryns don't they need a transport to make them worthwhile?

There is a traitor version of the Solar Auxilia called the Cthonian Headhunters. Eye of Horus and everything...

So you could thematically integrate them into your Son of Horus with no problem.

They look beautiful and are a rarely seen army.

The cost...yeah.

Look I am going to level with you, unless you are willing to sell a soul, an organ, or buy questionably cheap FW on ebay they may not be the army for you.

Well actually it's closer to £850 it consists of

3 Las Rifle Sections
2 Flamer Sections
Household Retinue with power axes
3 Dracosians
Lord Marshal & Tactical Command Squad
Medics
Malcador Infernus

I'm picking up some second hand Leman Russ's to save some money.

I just picked up 5 Las rifle section, 2 veletaris sections, 1 flamer section, command and 3 Dracosans on ebay. Really good deal. Tanks need painting, and infantry are already done fairly well. Still need more though :/

$$$

I couldn't see anything on eBay as I went there first so I just went to the expensive route.

Also picked up the old masterclass books and I'm pretty eager to test them out on this army

There's a dude on the FB heresy trading group selling some solar auxilia 700 obo. They're unpainted. If you're wanting more.

Tbh, I was kinda lookin forward to painting with blue on the solar auxilia. But for how much I got them for, I guess I'll deal. Still got an extra veletaris that I might just paint blue...

You should post up a project log. I'll cheer ya on ;)

My first follower haha

It might actually help me keep on track! Just picked up the Forgeworld Masterclass books so tonight I'm scanning them looking for possible Tank schemes. The Grey you usually see is really quite bland

Check some real world camouflage patterns. If you look up some First World War, inter-war and Cold War patterns there are some really interesting ones that wouldn't look out of place on Sci-fi vehicles. WW1 battleship camo. Is particularly good and unusual.

I've been looking at some vinyl stencils to use with my airbrush but none have hit the mark yet. I've looked at loads of examples but nothing has grabbed me

You're a good man PA. As they say. Boys join the Astartes. Real men join the Auxilia.
