With the long wait for Book 8 and the tragic/untimely death of Alan Bligh, it feels like the Heresy has stalled. Many seem uninterested in Custodes/Sisters which are the only current release (aside from some Sicaran variants). With the timing of 40k 8th are people losing interest in the Heresy?

At one time the Heresy seemed like an unstoppable juggernaut but lately there seems to be little passion. Feels like we are losing many members to other systems. The boards have been very silent. Thoughts? Am I too doom and gloom?

Most of the boards I frequent are quiet all the time any way, especially this one. Unless you count dakkadakka where every third post is "where are my plastic sisters/thunderhawk".

8th will have stolen some players but I don't think it'll have impacted on anything in FW's plans at the moment. I wouldn't be surprised if Alan Bligh had already written most of the background cause he was that sort of dude. Unfortunately it seems the answers from FW are going to be closely guarded, back in Feb 30k was a "supplement for 40k". It doesn''t appear that way today and we'll just have to see. For every person desperate for 30k 8th there's someone who likes the idea of 7th with improvements. Ultimately disappointment may mean some people give up/find something else to play but the meta doesn't take long to 'spoil' an edition and it is beginning in 8th so I wouldn't blame FW or the gamers themselves for whatever they choose to do.

Custodes selling so well surprised Forge World so that's why most of the releases are tending to be talon related, plus Blood Bowl has done very well.  But if you look at the releases available tomorrow, nearly all of them are 30k so no I don't think it's stalled. I think we're about to enter a really good era - Adeptus Titanicus may be finally revealed tomorrow, if not then we're likely getting a new guard kit which either way you look at it is awesome.

While there is that uncertainty, I'll be playing the FW rules for 30k and not a fan made supplement but you do you and I'll do me.

should probably be asking this tomorrow evening, feels like you're just setting yourself up to eat your words to be honest.

to be honest its hardly stalled, its just taking the back seat, for the moment, HH has got at least another 6-8 months at least before its next black book, and with the event of 8th edition, GW wants their flagship game to get well (sales wise) so having competition for the money in the same release window isn't a good idea, after all people only have so much per paycheck to send on the hobby, and releasing two 'ticket' items together would only hurt sales numbers for each.

FW are aware of what sells, and custodes and sisters have a massive following and nearly 30yrs of hype building. (always had the biggest cheers at the seminars), and its a brand new faction with no carry over models like the legions are. So they're focusing on getting everything out for them as soon as possible, because once the rules departments get settled on the units and characters for the Angel legions, they'll be moving on to them, and items will get left to gather dust on the to do list.

plus you need to remember that a lot of the FW team now spilt their time between FW 'proper' and the middle earth/specialist games departments.

either way, we'll be getting some wovles stuff tomorrow, along with probably another primarch as well.

anyways I recon we'll see a revitalisation of heresy gaming once the updated rulebook comes out. know I've got a heresy campaign coming up at my local gaming club, so will be getting plenty of gaming in myself.

ALSO (added after original post)

Regarding Alan's death. FWs production takes several months between a model being finished and being ready for sale (mould production and stock building) and even then the GW sales department decides when to release it once its there (anything between 2-4+mths depending on kit size and expected sales) so the stuff that's being and has been released since his death had already been finished and in production. The effects of his death on the direction and releases of the Horus Heresy and other Forge World stuff won't be felt for months. Angelus will probably be the next real release that will show anything.

Has Heresy stalled, well yes, of course it has.

8th is a drastic change from 7th so it reinvigorated a lot of people and they rightly want to play with it for the time being, not to mention Primaris.

But Heresy has stalled before, this comes and goes when it comes to 30k. Everyone wants to jump on the new hotness, and right now Primaris and 8th are the new hotness.

But 30k isnt and hasnt been the new thing for several years now. Its a constant. Its a game thats come into its own. Its the other game that is arguably better in most ways, and because of that the same thing will happened which has happened before when 7th came;

people are going to get tired of the new hotness and frustrated with where the main game is, which will inevitably come about as it always does due to a complex interaction of mass sales, shareholders, mold injection monetary investments, and what the target market is. People will slowly move back to Heresy as it did during 7th ed.

This has happened before and it will happen again when 9th ed rolls around.

Garro - Heresy is my number 1 system so I would be more than happy to eat my own words.

No brakes and no stalling on the heresy train! Woo woo!

I find most boards slow down in the summer.

Its certainly stalled in our group, i just cant find the gaming keen for 7th when 8th is so much more fun to play :/

Im currently booked into 2 HH events in the near future but can only summon the keen for the small scale ZM one because that avoids most of the crap 7th ed has going on.

Ill just mothball the heresy toys once ive finished those probably and wait for the 8th ed update down the line.

As a regular ( fall, winter & spring ) reader and posting person Alaric's post is spot on. Come summer, hobby time crashes into the dust under the weight of Clean up and maint. On The House, Cabin, yard equipment, gardens etc. And then, breweries to visit, whiskeys to drink at sunset with the Missus, and the all important week at the shore, plus barbecuing. What's a gamer to do? A scenario to consider, if you will; It takes me about 12 hours to finish an 8 to 10 man squad nothing fancy, a few highlights, some shading/weathering, and ( very ) simple basing. All in costs about $120.00 ( u.s.) I end up with a squad painted and ready to go. Unless it was raining, I've also pissed off the Missus cause she wanted to be outside doing "summer things " or It takes about 12:00 hours to properly smoke a few racks of spareribs 4 to 6 dry rub, then another 6 to smoke properly ( about 225degreesfarenheit ) and the cost of the ribs, side dishes, and beverages ( Craft Beers, wines, whiskeys) is roughly equal to tha aforementioned squad.... Added bonus being that My wife is happy, we're doing " summer " things, and she's bullied the both of us around and the house is picked up, and probably the yard work too, and I've gotten to smoke meat in a proper "Manly American" way, and we're going to have friends over having fun with us. Making herself quite happy, me quite happy ( because she is too) and building serious credit for three seasons of hobby time in usable increments. I expect some of you who are married will totally " get " this, and for you all who aren't grey panthers yet, a lesson might be gleaned fro this yarn. May the Pax Imperalis be with you

Well I think it's more than just FW.  Look at the Black Library.  Talk about a stall!  The last book of any real importance was Master of Mankind.  All of the anthologies and short reads are just filler.  The timeline stalled a while back and really hasn't done much to move it forward.  It's been 10 years! It's time to move on and bring the ship to port gents.  I know people have very different views on this but honestly at this point, they should leave it in the hands of some of the best authors and bring this thing to it's climax.

As for Forgeworld,  I think Alans passing is a terrible loss for the community and for the Heresy. I don't think anyone can follow up and do what he has done.  They should rethink the 15-20 book plan and condense it down to about 10 or 12.  They can continue the cash grab by doing some campaign style books like they have done in the past. (Badab war style) with some of the various pre heresy stuff.

Think of a 3 or 4 book set based on Ullanor!  Follow that up with a 2 book set on Murder! and after the Heresy they can keep going. The Iron Cage...The possibilities are endless.

I don't know, It's just my opinion but I do agree, they have stalled and they are dragging this thing out way to long.

'Long wait for Book 8'?

As far as we know Book 8 is still on track for release next year. Only once have FW done a double-release of Black Books in a single year. News from the Open Day should help clarify what is happening long term.

I am still Full into the Heresy, I have painted 2,500 points of Alpha Legion in the last week's. There are many reasons why there is no project about them. My laziness to set up the foto box, the photobucket case.

Good Lord Raglan,

There must be something in the water because you Welshmen are all bonkers ;)

I'm glad to see such an active thread.

I wanted to stimulate discussion about the state of the heresy. Between a long release for book 8, Alan's death, 8th edition and heresy staying in 7th I was worried we might lose a big junk of our community to the new shiny stuff. I don't think heresy will ever die off like Fantasy but it could see it become a more niche game like the aweful LOTR.

Side note - I hate the forgeworld is wasting its time with the stupid LOTR game. Compared to the old Fantasy I think the models are rubbish. Steals time away from the heresy.

Thank you sir, but we as a nation prefer the term Welsh twats or deranged sheep shaggers  :)

In all seriousness, the Heresy has definitely dropped off the radar for GW and FW, which has now left me wondering if it will ever gain the impetuous it achieved last year (particularly now that Alan is no longer there to advocate and drive forward the 30k project). Without the creative mind behind the Heresy, will anyone else be able to move it forward?

Is the heresy dead?

In terms of modelling and painting - no. There are still plenty of miniatures I would love to get, assemble and paint up for my Fists. Some are soo cool I am thinking about getting some of the Primarch to paint up.

Game wise - yes. I have not played a HH 7th game in over 6 months yet I've played 6 8th edition Games with mates. It's certainly slicker and more fun than 7th edition but it's not HH.

The HH is merely slumbering like an ember....

So, if recent Open Day is any indication, Heresy right now is in comatose condition. Ah well, nothing stops me from painting some models just for the hell of it.

Lucky for me I've really only ever painted and modeled. I guess wolves will be on hold indefinitely......especially with the garbage that is the varangyr. And am I correct with that same guy modeled all the wolf stuff?

Yes, it's stalled. But it's still around. Hopefully they get off their arses and move up a gear once they've dealt with bloodbowl minis and 8th.

Bagged a few in my day. Its an adventure but to catch that POKEMON the easiest way you need thr right bait. MONEY and FLOWERS can bring the elusive beast out. Be careful though as once the beast is found you may lose it again if you are not diligent! Hope you have the pokeballs.
