Haven't done a non power armour army since a small praetorian guard (Zulu style IG, pith helmets and tunics!) army back in 2nd edition.

FW and GW have come such a long way since then so I'm leaving the power armour behind and starting an ad mech force.

First up is an imperial knight, as initially I was dead set on a questoris knights army, but I've been tempted away by the potential for giant robots and tanks. Maybe in a few months I'll expand the knights and have an off-shoot army.

Here's where I'm at now;

Trying a lot of new things, well, new to me. Airbrushing anything more than a base coat, oil washes, (coming soon), weathering, etc...

Progress is slow but real, on a course away from home for the week (and next week sadly) so I've been able to get some stuff done.  I have chipped the decals a bit to make them less pristine and new and pretty much finished the base, though I did it without the model attached which leads to the problem of having a knight titan 'floating' on cracked dry earth, going to have to have a think about that!

Weathering is still a to-do as I'm waiting for element games to get their proverbial in one sock and send me a bottle of AK Interactive Streaking Grime.  I've been tempted to just head to an art supplier and do things the old fashioned way with oils but that's creating work for myself in the long term so I'll just have to wait for now.

Very nice mate.

Progress continues! First stage of the weathering/dirtying is complete.  Bit of rust and dust to do tomorrow evening when these enamels have had sufficient time to dry.  Can anyone recommend a good matte/almost matte varnish?  Ideally something acrylic that I can airbrush on, I absolutely loathe rattle cans.

I have great success using Vallejo matte varnish through my airbrush. Just make sure to thin it only with water.

And always do a test mini or 5.  :D  For example, I haven't matte varnished in a while so I practiced yesterday on 10 sketarii infantry to check my water varnish mix, pressure and application thickness.  Everything worked great so today Cawl and my Thallax get their matte coat.

Rusting and dusting complete, I'm pretty much done with the big guy for now until some matt varnish arrives, still haven't attached him to the base either, thinking of re-doing it entirely with him already attached.

Sadly my iPhone camera isn't really capturing his 'spirit', I need to build a new photo booth at some point I guess!

Not sure what's next, possibly/probably a 'start collecting' skitarii box in preparation for 8th.

Thanks! Not going to lie, the technique for 99% of it was stolen from niftyvt :-)

Awesome weathering! What did you use to seal the model before using the AK Interactiv Streaking Grime? Did you spray the AK stuff with an airbrush on, and then just removed the paint with a cloth?

I used this stuff to seal it;

Wow... long link!

Sprayed the AK enamels on with a cheap airbrush and then wiped it off an hour later with an old tshirt. It's a really simple technique and really effective.

Excellent weathering. Simple but very effective.

How did you go about magnetising the arms on the Knight?

8mm magnets for the arms, 3mm for the carapace and the melta/stubber. I'll get photos this afternoon.
It's not fully magnetised, I didn't have enough parts to do the big melta-cannon thingy or the power fist. Will have to buy another one for those bits!

I use this through my airbrush. They have gloss and matt in the same range. Finish is perfect and doesn't need thinned. Sometimes comes with a yellow and black checked label instead.

Nice! I didn't know Vallejo had an airbrush specific line of varnish. I will get some my next paint order!
