Good looking conversion, I like the green stuff work, very thematic. The helmet and shield hanging are a nice detail touch too. Can't wait to see paint on it!

Coolness. What's your white recipe?

Thanks! the thing is, it's all about making an off white (as you can see in the previous pictures). If you can achieve that, the other spot colors will make it look like a regular white.

You'll need an airbrush but here's the recipe:

1.) prime Vallejo black

2.) base coat FW Typhon ash

3.) 60/40 mix of GW White Scar air/Typhon ash

4.) while step 3 is finished but you still have some paint left in the bowl, gradually add more white to it (about 80/20) and hit the highest places of the model.

Hope that helps :) an airbrush makes doing white actually achievable.

Anyone have success with weathering powders? I'm tempted to get into them but I'm afraid they'll a.) lose their luster if I "affix" it or b.) dust off when I place the models in their cases

I'm also debating what I should do for bases. The white begs for a sandy, dusty base, but I also like SWM's swamp bases with water effects.

Swampy would be a nice change from all of us who went the dusty route :D

As for weathering powders, I saw someone writig about how he airbrushed them on, by putting some white spirit and pigments in his airbrush cup. I'd maybe look into that, do a tester on something other than the miniatures?

Nice looking Scars.

Yep this is what I do with my weathering powders. I used to apply them with a brush and then fix them with white spirit. It was all a bit messy and inconsistent. Using my airbrush gets a clean even coverage. Make sure to clean your airbrush well afterwards.

Btw, whose pigments did you use? I have heard good things about MIG and AK interactive.

I've gotten a few requests on how I do my white so I just wanted to put it up for anyone looking for a starting spot :) you will need an airbrush though! (It's half the battle in all honesty)

So I start off painting these WS Keshig guys with Zandri Dust air over a Vallejo black primer:

0A70F601-E33A-46DC-BA01-62541D646F6E_zps

Then, I add some white to the leftover Zandri dust in the bowl, trying to get a lighter khaki color. The first Zandri coat you can be wayyyy more liberal in application, but you want this second coat to be a bit more precise as you need to think about shading and shadows. It's about a 50/50 White Scar air to Zandri dust thinned down (will require a visual judgement call):

3E3485ED-A3B0-4495-B1E0-73BB57CFFED6_zps

You can see the difference in the first and second model from the right contrasting against the ZD layer:

0CD47001-5E81-4CB8-B524-02A8A4370219_zps

Next I do a 75/25 mix from the leftovers in the bowl WS/ZD. It's not this pure white as it just needs to be mixed, I just wanted to show the proportions:

AF3A3D76-394F-48DD-83AB-354797FE3C83_zps

You can see the difference between the three in the foreground and the lighter contrast to the previous coat (two in the background):

2524336E-89FC-4DFF-B132-5F65F724896C_zps

Finally, I hit the topmost areas from nearly a 90 degree angle from the model with pure WS:

4C6A000F-48A5-4BC4-90DA-8A7A5B179180_zps

And here's just a good close up to illustrate the shading effects so it doesn't look caked up or ham handed :P

6EF63B3E-01A9-487F-8BDD-DE81C3406A23_zps

I hope that helps some of you! There are different ways to tweak it, but it would work well with DG and WS, but I'd recommend a grey instead of khaki for a WE undercoat :D
